
Q: Who are Little Brothers and Little Sisters?
A: Little Brothers and Little Sisters are between the ages of 6 and 14 and come from all different backgrounds, races and religions.
Q: Who are Big Brothers and Big Sisters?
A: Big Brothers and Big Sisters are adults, at least 16 years old, who as mature, responsible and caring adults, can relate in a positive and meaningful way to a young child. They must complete an approval process, which includes a detailed interview, reference information, police checks, and background information.
Q: How much time do Bigs and Littles spend together?
A: In the traditional/community-based program, Bigs and Littles make a commitment to spend at least one-and-a-half to two hours per week together for at least one year.
Q: What do Bigs and Littles do?
A: Matches do many different things together, depending on their interests. They could go to movies, bake cookies, attend sporting events or participate in the many agency activities specifically planned for matches. What is most important is the time they share together!
Q: Does it cost to be in your program?
A: No, our program is free. Only the activities the matches choose could cost money. Big Brothers Big Sisters encourages low or no-cost activities and offers planned activities for participants in the program. However, it does cost the Agency approximately $1,500/year to make and support a match.
Q: Are Little Brothers ever matched with Big Sisters or vice versa?
A: Actually the answer is "Yes" and "No". Little Sisters are only matched with Big Sisters while Little Brothers can be matched with Big Brothers or Big Sisters. The only caveat is that the age limit is 12 for a Little Brother to be matched with a Big Sister.
Q: How long will it take for my child to get a Big Brother or Big Sister?
A: It is difficult to give an exact time because there are many factors that could affect the waiting time for your child. We encourage you to begin the process as soon as possible, after talking with your child to make sure he/she is interested in having a Big Brother or Big Sister.
Q: How long will it take a volunteer to be matched with a Little Brother or Little Sister?
A: It takes about a month to be screened, approved and matched with a child whose geographical location, needs and personality best suits the volunteer.
Q: How are Bigs and Littles matched?
A: Bigs and Littles are matched on the basis of geography, according to the needs of the Little and the skills the Big has to meet those needs, and on the basis of shared interests.
